Curatorial
Fluidity
Sabine Pollak 2012
Rhino plastic and thread
This form uses curvature as well as
linear aspects to communicate a message of fluidity in its form. The form itself
was crafted by the artist’s hand using thin thin-sheet rhino plastic and black
and white thread, and was inspired by works of fellow artist William Crovello
and photographer Jason Mena. Crovello’s work consists of fluid, crisp curvature,
while in contrast Mena’s photography involves multiple linear layers of his
structural subject. Pollak incorporates both of these ideas into her form
resulting in a simple, yet elegant design. It has been said that “Jason Mena’s
work entails a multi-faceted approach to contemporaneity that, drawn from
conceptualism and minimalism, reveals the complexities and contradictions of
the ever increasing urbanization of space.” (Creative
Caribbean Network, para. 2). Pollak’s work showcases these minimalistic
contemporary ideas through use of monochromatic colour as well as simplistic
form and use of minimal materials. These materials intersect so as to show the
linear thread lines interaction with the curved plastic. In this way is
reflects Mena’s work which uses multiple linear interaction. In an article
about Jason Mena’s work, Paul Virilio talks of “architecture thrown up
by perception of the phenomena that surround” (Creative
Caribbean Network, para. 1). this is clearly visible in his use of abstract
contemporary photography, Pollak strips down this ideal to give a simplistic
abstract interpretation in her work.
The form
showcases design theory in its form showing balance as well as symmetry, these
ideals are reminiscent of the Rococo art style movement which incorporates
fluidity and curves. These ideas, in conjunction with the contemporary artist
inspiration create a harmony that incorporates design history and contemporary
design in one form.
