Research Statement and Annotated Bibliography

Research field:
ART NOUVEAU
The research field I am using for my annotated bibliography assignment is Art Nouveau, a style that was very popular from 1890–1910.

1. A book with single author
Murrell, K. (1997). Moscow Art Nouveau. London, England : Philip Wilson Publishers

This book would be helpful when researching Art Nouveau in other countries, to get a holistic view of the genre. This book focuses on the Art Nouveau art and architecture in Moscow, and shows the diverse range of it in Moscow. This source would be helpful when finding images of the art in situ.

2. A scholarly journal article
Roncevic, M. (2009). Fall for Art. Library Journal, 134 (13) N/A. Retrieved March 27 2012, From ABI/INFORM Global database.

Scholarly Journal Articles would be helpful when researching Art Nouveau as it would start with another researcher’s personal opinion and then go on to give factual information about the topic. This journal article focuses on art books and the lack of informative ones. This would help to give a list of useful books for Art Nouveau research.

3. An edited book
Vegesack, von Moos, Ruegg, Kries. (Ed.). (2007) Le Corbusier: the art of architecture. Weil am Rhein [Germany]: Vitra Design Stiftung.

This edited book is about the art exhibition of Le Corbusier, an artist and architect who interacted with French designers. It would be helpful when exploring a specific artist and the move to more modern art styles during the end of the Art Nouveau period. A book like this would be helpful because there is a range of authors contributing, meaning there will be more varying opinions and ideas.

4. A website.
Art Nouveau Network. (2009). Reseau Art Nouveau Network. Retrieved from http://www.artnouveau-net.eu/

This website is completely dedicated to Art Nouveau. The Culture Programme of the European Union, which promotes European awareness in the arts industries, supports it. The website is informative about current Art Nouveau exhibitions and has a section specifically with educational material. Sections are divided into cities; this would be helpful when learning about Art Nouveau internationally.

5. Image
Martha Lattie
(2005, September 22). [Web blog post] Your Daily Art: Smooches. Retrieved from: http://art.jerryandmartha.com/2005/09/smooches.html

This image is of an artwork called The Kiss by Gustav Klimt and depicts a male figure lovingly leaning over a female. I think this image would be useful when researching Art Nouveau as it would give the viewer a clear, visual example of a well-known art piece in the Art Nouveau genre from a famous artist (Klimt).

101 Exercise Six: Individual Work

Precedent Image

Final

I chose map drawings as my technical drawing style because I have always found the way they are intricately drawn to be interesting. I came across an image from a blog of an antique map that I used as a precedent image for exercise six. I drew my image from exercise one (identity) into this style. I like the contrast between simplistic, monochrome and modern forms that are in my drawing the colourful and detailed drawing of the map. I tried to use aspects of both images, copying the forms of my drawing to make continents on the map.

111 Project 1

Working on project one for DSDN111, I have made quite a few paper models, a couple of which have been unsuccessful.. Most of them are quite simple geometric forms, and incorporate triangle folding. Two of the paper models have small cut-outs which are interesting and show negative space. After this I will re-create some of the models using cardboard.

Design Persona

Hi,
My name is Sabine Pollak, I am from Auckland and have lived there all my life. I knew that I wanted to study something in the art/design field because I’ve always particularly loved art and design subjects (even finger painting in primary school). I took these subjects throughout high school, painting being my favourite subject. Even though it’s stressful at times, art has always been something therapeutic and enjoyable for me.

Although I do generally like Auckland, I wanted a change for university. Otago seemed a bit too far away and cold, and I’ve always liked Wellington so I explored what was there to study in the art/design field. This was how I initially stumbled across the Bachelor of Design Innovation at Victoria. As soon as I read the course description I knew it was what I wanted to study.

While I’m still figuring out my strengths and weaknesses in this field, there are some aspirations that I do already have. I would love to somehow get into the film industry, film being another of my passions. Ideally, I would be incorporating design and film to have a career such as makeup or set design for films. Although the film industry is so huge, and it’s difficult to be successful in, I have always felt that this was an area at which I could excel and am passionate about.

I feel that attending Design school is the best way to achieve this goal and gain practice and experience in this area that I am still grasping. I love the freedom given to us to explore and show our creativity, and this has already helped me to push my creativity more than I would have, surprising even myself.
