112 Storyboard

This is the storyboard for my part B interim hand-in. These are the sequence of shots I plan to use in my short-film. I intend to make it seem like a short advertisement, this will mean my film should be relatively short and straight to the point. As noted on my storyboard, I still need to work on a complementing colour scheme throughout my ad and the music I will use. I also need to create the logos for my ad and re-create my screenshots on photoshop rather than by hand.

112 Shot ideas

Below is a list of shots I intend to film by camera using a person. These shots will be included in my short-film to show human interaction with the app. I have decided to try and style my short-film to be like an advertisement; mainly showing the application and features and a few shots showing someone using it and interacting with the environment that the programme was designed for.

112 Written Explanation

Sabine Pollak

My interactive application was designed to be very easy to use and visually aesthetic. This program was designed with first year students in mind but could be helpful for any students looking to find their way around the campus –especially at the beginning of the year. The whole design of the progam has plain black backgrounds with instructions illuminated in yellow. There is a limited colour palette, which highlights the different options and contrasts against the black. Further into the application, options are colour-coded to show different shades of the same groups e.g. if Cotton building is green, then so are the levels inside that building.
To use the application: firstly, the user takes a photo of their surroundings, which then comes up in the campus database. The user’s photo is matched to their correct location in the university. The next screen shows a circle map with the most popular first –year buildings for lectures in bigger circles and less popular in smaller circles. As the application is used more, the user’s most frequented buildings become the more popular ones –in bigger circles. The next screen shows the options to choose the level that the lecture theatre is on. After this, the circle map is repeated in a co-ordinating colour to the building where the user chooses the lecture theatre room. In order to get there, options appear so the user can choose the kind of route to get there e.g. inside if its raining.  After this the route is then highlighted in yellow on a simple floor plan map. As the user walks through the route, their position is highlighted and zoomed in as to give the user a clearer idea of where they are in relation to the map.

112 Flash of Application

I managed to change the labels of each keyframe so that they corresponded to the instance name which fixed the problem and then deleted the 2nd code for each action so that it wasn't duplicated. I wanted to give my application a hand-drawn, simple look that was easy to use and visually pleasing while being something that I myself would actually use.

112 Flash problems

Having difficulties with Flash application as the functions keep duplicating or are on the wrong level meaning the action function cant find the information for the action. I am trying to solve this problem by renaming and uploading as my flash application has a simple click-through format

112 Display Write-Up

Pollak Sabine
Bean-Boozled

My interactive object involves the hearing and visual senses, this object will become ‘active’
when opened and ‘inactive’ when closed again. I took a specific lolly brand and type and
insert a sound device that emits sound when the package is opened. As well as this feature,
I inserted LED lights into the package that emit light corresponding to the sound when the
box is opened. These two features will surprise the user as well as play with their
expectations of the experience of opening a lolly packet. Using a pre-made sound device,
I plan to have a simple yet distinctive and loud song playing that is memorable for the user
so they can associate the sound with my object. Ideally, the user will be surprised that this
simple and ordinary object is emitting not just sound; but a loud and clear song.

Instruction
The instructions for my delicate interactive object are relatively straightforward. As with any
box of jelly beans, the user simply needs to open the lid for the box to become an interactive
object.

112 Object Change

Unfortunately with working with the same box of jelly beans for the entire project, the box has become tattered and is difficult to attach the sound device to due to its tiny size. I think I will have to use another box i purchased, its the same brand, Jelly Bellys, but is a slightly bigger box and it also has a small clear sections so as to see the jellybeans through, this will add to the suprise as the user can literally see jelly beans in the box.

112 Progress Images-Feathers

I wanted to incorporate scent into my design so I tried to do this by adding scent to feathers and sticking those on top of the jelly bean box. I soaked the overnight for a few days in lemon scented oil and then dried them out, unfortunately this made the feather become a bit tattered and eventually looked too messy to use in my design

This is what my A3 storyboard looks like: there are 8 images showing the users intended experience/interaction with my object.

112 Interactive Proposal

Interactive proposal outlining ideas.

For my interactive object, I plan to re-invent the typical packet of lollies. Involving the hearing and visual senses, this object will become ‘active’ when opened and ‘inactive’ when closed again. I aim to take a simple box of one specific lolly brand and type and insert a sound device that emits sound when the package is opened. As well as this feature, I plan to insert LED lights into the package that emit light corresponding to the sound when the box is opened. These two features will surprise the user as well as play with their expectations of the experience of opening a lolly packet.
Using a pre-made sound device, I plan to have a simple yet distinctive and loud song playing that is memorable for the user so they can associate the sound with my object. I will use a soldering iron to connect the LED wires to the main board so that all the internal pieces are connected on one main board and are coherent with one another.
Ideally, the user will be surprised that this simple and ordinary object is emitting not just sound; but a loud and clear song. This will be further enhanced by the sight of LED lights, which will add to the users shock of this interactive object.

112 Initial Brainstorming

After thinking of ideas for my project I decided to write down what the criteria was and which senses I was interested in pursuing for my ideas.

112 Beginning Assignment #1

Today we were introduced to our first assignment, which is a design form that revolves around a 'sensory experience' and is interactive. This can either focus on one sense or include use of multiple senses. These are just some quick and rough sketchs about the "touch sense" and the interaction involved with it.

112 First Studio Lesson

Today we has our first studio session for 112 -intro to interaction design. The paper is mixed industrial and media and consists of two assignments, the first is a sensory project. It is where we have to make a model that focuses on one sensor and uses this sense in it's design. I think that touch or smell are the best senses to use as sight is a given sense for every model, hearing is a difficult sense to use and taste is unhygienic to use in a model.

101 Final Stop Motion Clip

This is my final stop motion film, I decided to leave out sound because it didn't flow nicely and made the clip jumpy. My clip is simple but I hope it communicates the message clearly, I slowed down the speed of each still to 0.2seconds so it moved more smoothly.

171 Blog #5

Locovisual

The building I have chosen in the Wellington region is above a shoe store on Cuba Street, and in the art deco style. I feel that this particular building shows aspects of art deco style. It uses geometric pattern in its colour scheme and layout, this is showcased through use of contrasting bright, pastel colour in the building. Meisler and Stanley (2004) talk of art deco containing “geometric patterns-circles, zigzags, squares-classical motifs, bright colors”. These add to the luxurious and modern (at the time) ideals that are associated with the art deco movement. This movement was a response to the curvilinear and organic style of the art nouveau movement.  This style was focused on “anything that hinted of speed. There is pizazz and energy in Art Deco, as well as glamour and luxury” (Meisler & Stanley, 2004, p.56-60) and having an “elegant craftsmanship [in] true deco” (Annonymous, 2005, p.26). This style was also influenced by past art movements including neoclassicalconstructivismcubism and modernism; it uses more of the linear and geometric lines from these past styles as opposed to fluid and flowing shapes from other styles before it.
This building represents these ideas through its use of symmetrical design layout as well as its clear and rounded windows; these features add to the modernity and crispness of the building. Adding to this, its location in central Cuba contrasts to the style of the buildings around it. While most of the architecture around central Wellington is either modern apartment buildings or shops, this one stands out with its striking colours.

101 Design Standpoint

Design Standpoint for Stop Motion

My aim for this stop motion project was to create a body of work that shows the impact of the natural outside environment on design. Further to this, I wish to explore the importance of eco-friendly design as well as its use in today’s product design. My chosen major as Culture + Context allows me to show this standpoint through a brief evolution of product design from wood. Hitachi Ltd. produced a report on green productivity that argues “to establish a sustainable economic system, we must consider product manufacturing from the viewpoint of the relationship between products and the environment.” I agree with this standpoint as product sourcing and materials are an important consideration in the design process. The effects of using unsustainable materials have taken its toll on the natural environment. Rainforest Facts suggest that while the Earth’s land surface was 14% covered in rainforest, it now covers only 6% and is estimates that “the last remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years.” Whilst my stop motion project enforces the idea of using natural resources such as wood, I am opposed to consumption of materials without replenishing them. E.g. if a log of wood is used for furniture, another tree can be planted in its place as well as being a bio-degradable material, unlike plastics in which “global consumption of all flexible packaging, estimated at 12.3 million tonnes/year, estimates put global production capacity at 327,000 tonnes/year for related bio-derived materials.”
The argument of eco-friendly design is a big issue impacting us today and one that corresponds with Culture + Context –social issues in design. This issue is particularly relevant today with the environmental climate we are in. Many designers have commendably been aware of this and incorporated it into their design. I think that promoting awareness for this issue is one of the biggest ways to promote change as well as our ideals about sustainability as well as minimising consumption.

101 Group Task Two

This is the 15second ad we made as the second of our group projects. It is also for the spot cleaning company.
Statement:
The intentions for this advertisement are to promote our company’s services. Our company 'Spot Cleaning Services' provides an array of cleaning specialties, with our forte being stain removal in clothing. We have a fantastic and skilful team who aim to provide fantastic service at an affordable price, it shouldn’t cost and arm and a leg to get a stain removed! Our short advertisement is simple yet effective, it uses nautical themes as well as a 1950s style to promote the cleaning company. We used a stop motion style to collaborate images that move in a way that is reminiscent of the 1950s style. Our “characters” are the same as those seen in other advertisements for our company (our poster). A girl is seductively sitting on a moving washing machine to represent clothes being cleaned. There are bubbles in the background, iconic with cleaning, as well as adding to the whimsical feel of our advertising campaign. The intentions of our advertisement are to be playful yet clear in getting across our services in the cleaning industry. We enhanced this idea with use of music of the 50s, which add to the upbeat feeling. This advertisement uses simple but clever construction to appeal as an authentic ad whilst remaining original in a modern age.
